Tyler Deal

Tyler Deal is a Boone, NC native.  She began her undergraduate studies at the University of Montana in Missoula and completed them at Appalachian, earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. Tyler then completed her MFA at Pratt Institute in New York in 2006.  Following these, she became involved in human services as a certified nursing assistant in Idaho and Montana working with the elderly. Tyler moved back east and began teaching art at UNC Asheville in 2010.  She started teaching art at ASU in 2011.  In 2015, she earned an MA in clinical mental health counseling and a postgraduate certificate in expressive arts therapy from ASU.  Tyler is also the founder and facilitator of open studio support groups for cancer survivors in Watauga, Ashe, and Avery Counties in collaboration with Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center.  Tyler loves to teach and share her love of Appalachia and the combined power of arts and nature. When not involved in teaching or community-based work Tyler can be found roaming the Blue Ridge Mountains with her dogs Odin and Bella or covered in paint or mud working in her pottery and painting studios.
