Civic Engagement

In this first-year seminar course, we'll discuss volunteerism, community engagement, and privilege. We will read texts that vary from poetry, short stories, two novels, and academic texts on the dynamics of community engagement and the rhetoric that plays into that. Students will gain an understanding of why service is so important, how it affects our local community in Boone, and take a bigger look at how community engagement plays into the world at large. Students will actively engage with community partners and complete between 6-8 hours of service.

NOTE:  Enrollment in these sections is restricted to Student Support Services students only.

Mady Rizzo is an Instructor and Advisor with Student Support Services. She received her B.A. in English Literature from Appalachian State University in 2010 and after a few adventures traveling across the country, she returned to graduate with her Master's in English in 2014. She taught at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College for the past two years while working full-time with Americorps as a VISTA. Community engagement is a passion she is eager to bring to her classroom. She uses her backgrounds in volunteerism, literature, and composition to encourage students to reflect in an impactful and intentional way which encourages a deeper connection with the material and the local community.
While Mady enjoys traveling and is always planning her next trip, she couldn't be happier to have found a home at Appalachian and to finally put down roots.
