include a unit on international education, which includes a discussion about engineering careers in different countries. The future challenges in the engineering profession related to climate change and changing energy infrastructure will also be addressed to understand the connections between local energy choices and global impacts. There will also be an emphasis placed on the importance of developing right-brain skills to maximize the effectiveness and inventiveness of the engineer which will be accomplished through individual and team creative design projects and a community service learning opportunity.

Instructor:

Carla Ramsdell is a lecturer in the physics and astronomy department at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.  She received a BS in Physics from Stetson University and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Florida.  She holds a professional engineer license in the state of Florida. She worked as a thermodynamic engineer for Siemens-Westinghouse power generation in Orlando, FL from 1991 to 2003.  From 2004 to 2008, Carla worked for a small sustainable-focused HVAC engineering company, Building Performance Engineering in Boone, NC. She has been teaching in the physics and astronomy department at Appalachian State University since 2008.  In addition to general education general physics courses, Carla has developed and taught several other courses including "The Physical Science of Energy and Sustainability", a pre-engineering course called "The Inspired Engineer" and "Know Watts Cooking  - The Physics of Energy Efficient Cooking". Carla is also involved in STEM outreach in the K-12 classroom with a goal to inspire future scientists and engineers.  Additionally, she does several "Know Watts Cooking" adult public education outreach events annually to promote a conversation among community members regarding our responsible use of energy in the kitchen.
