This course focuses on identifying and analyzing key influences on US culture. Students will analyze and evaluate the impact of specific social groups, traditions, educational and political perspectives, media, sports, and other social factors shaping the current cultural dynamics. The course will be adapted to the needs/interests of the students in the course. Topics could include: historical reviews of selected influences; current beliefs and values; media and public perspectives; sex, gender and sexuality bias; the impact of media and technology on sports; communication; environmental issues; the college experience; and sports and social activities. Individual and group assignments, debates, surveys and data collection, evidence-based decision-making, basic research projects and presentation will be central course activities. Ultimately, the students will leave with a greater understanding of the role of various factors in shaping the current US culture.
