What do Wonder Woman, Betty Crocker, Nancy Drew, and Barbie have in common?  Aside from being significant parts of American popular culture, their images were also embedded with subtle clues about “how women ought to behave”.  In this class we will examine American female icons from Betsy Ross to Katniss Everdeen within a historical context.  We will explore their roles in creating and maintaining gendered expectations for both men and women.
