In this course we will be examining artistic, scriptural and philosophical reactions to, and representations of, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic scenarios. We will view films and read texts (both works of fiction, including two novels, and passages from Jewish and Christian scripture) and we will discuss and write about these works. We will be looking at the world and at humanity 'in extremis,' that is, at their most extreme points, in order to hopefully achieve a greater understanding of human nature.
