In this course we will read novels and watch films in the science fiction genre, and we will discuss and write about these works. We will be looking at America and humanity 'in extremis,' that is, at their most extreme points, in order to hopefully achieve a greater understanding of human nature. The majority of our readings will come from novels, but we will also look at historical and philosophical texts to broaden our discussions.
