A multi-disciplinary examination of environmental thinking and writing about the impact of industrialization on man and nature, with emphasis on post-World War II thought, and on the troubling intellectual and temporal implications for 21st-century human societies of science-based warnings about the ecological trajectory of human history. Readings will be integrative, drawing on the fields of ecology, economics, education, climate science, film, history, international relations, music and nature writing. Modes of analysis will include book (2) and film reviews (several), documents analysis (minimum of 1), public lectures (1), and a short, library-based research project. Modes of delivery will include lecture (listening & transcribing skills), guided discussion of readings (deep reading skills), film (listening, note-taking, writing), music (listening, lyrics analysis) and original documents (textual analysis).
